A fantasia: shades of Arthurian fantasy in small-town Illinois, ca. 1990. A minor Wolfe, to be sure. More impenetrable than all the other Wolfe books I've read, with none of the payoff of the Wolfe classics. It's an interesting experiment, with the occasional good passage, but at this point (1990), I don't think Wolfe had quite mastered the spare style that he'd begun to take on after The Book of the New Sun. I do, however, look forward to seeing how this mid-to-late Wolfe style matured between Castleview (1990) and The Wizard Knight (2004).
